Android has further consolidated its top position in mobile advertising by securing 53% of all ads served to mobile devices during the second quarter in 2011, according to the latest reportfrom Millennial Media, the largest independent ad network.

Apple’s iOS stands second with 27% (4% increase from Q2 of 2010) market share.

The fact that there are far more Android phones available than the iPhones also contributed to Android’s success. More than two-third of the top 20 devices populating the Millennial’s list are powered by Android, compared to only four iPhones models (original iPhone, 3G, 3G S and iPhone 4). With the launch of the iPhone 5 in the third quarter Apple is expected to gain market share.

If we look at individual handsets, Apple’s iPhone still remains the No.1 ad target in the mobile world with 16.2 % (increasing from 5.82% in 2009) of the total ads served to mobile phones. Research In Motion‘s BlackBerry Curve stood at a distant third position with 5.6 percent of the market share. Next in line are Motorola Droid, Samsung Nexus S and BlackBerry Bold 2 capturing between 2-3% of the market share.

The report also showed an increase ad share for touchscreen devices from 33 % in 2009 to 60% in 2011. Only 11 percent of devices reached by Millennial Media have a non-QWERTY keypad. Further mobile ad share for devices with only QWERTY keyboard has dropped from 36 percent in 2009 to just 14 percent today.
